How Healthy Are School Lunches?
Written by: ^Northernstar*
I remember being in the cafeteria at Cherry Hill Elementary School, waiting in the line to get the over-processed food that didn’t even look edible. “Do you want some fruit cocktail with your hamburger,” the lunch lady asked while I frowned my face, yet nodded my head to say “yes”. The food wasn’t a typical “Thanksgiving-feast”, but it did its job of nourishing my body. Many of my classmates would often tease each other for eating the school lunch, insisting it was “artificial” and “the food will make you vomit”; strangely, my classmates were right.
It’s better to eat something for lunch than nothing at all, but make sure it’s healthy for the child to avoid
obesity and health problems.
In the article “Healthy Kids School Lunches”, Vincent Iannelli reports that it is important for children to eat lunch because it enables the body to sustain energy. There’s no way a child only should be eating once or twice a day. They need every nutrient they can get: breakfast is to start the day off, lunch allows the brain to work after a reckless morning, and dinner is the most important because it’s a time for relaxation, communication, and intimacy. Presently, children assume a bag of sour cream and onion potato chips and a Sprite is going to provide them with nutrients, but what they get in return is high cholesterol and diabetes.
