Beanpie – Volume 15 Episode 2: And so it begins

Written by: Shaun Bolden
Scene 3: Beanpie goes back outside and excitedly tells Tony about what just happened.
Beanpie: Tony, I have a box of my tea now being sold in Mr. Hank’s store.
Tony: That’s nice, but I think I worked a little bit harder than you did.
Beanpie: Oh really? How is that?
Tony: Well, my fool proof sales pitch sold our first bag of dog food.
Beanpie: Are you serious mate?
Tony: Yes I am. I told you I’m a hard worker.
Beanpie: Oh yes, I am in business, pretty soon I will own this area.
Scene 4: In a back alley downtown, Harry the Hawker is visited by one of his men.
Harry the Hawker: Well if it isn’t the Hawk’s eyes. Tell me Parrot Pete, what stories do we have today?
Parrot Pete: You remember that kid that came down here last week not knowing his head from his rear?
Harry the Hawker: Yeah, what about him?Parrot Pete: Well he is now in front of Old Man Honesty’s store.
Harry the Hawker: So what?
Parrot Pete: I also saw him making a few sales.
Harry the Hawker: Do you have any idea of what he has on that cart of his?
Parrot Pete: So far all I’ve seen is dog food, but he keeps the stuff under the cart hidden away, there is very little on top.
Harry the Hawker: It’s nothing to worry about now, but keep an eye on him. Nobody sells down here unless I get a cut. Keep me posted.
Parrot Pete: Sure thing.
Scene 5: The day is over and Beanpie is at home excited about making another sale.
Beanpie: Hey Lisa, things are starting to look up for me ya know?
Lisa: Oh yeah why do you say that?
Beanpie: Well, I sold a bag of dog food, and Mr. Hank is going to sell my tea in his store.
Lisa: Is that right? Wow, I am surprised, you are actually making it work…..well I guess it has to start somewhere.
Beanpie: I think this will only get better. I just hope people pass the word about my products.
Lisa: If it’s good trust me, people will talk about it.
Beanpie: You’re right my lady. I can see it now…..my products in every home.
Lisa: First you need to replenish the items you sell Mr. Business man.
Beanpie: You’re right. I still have plenty, but I do not want to run out either.
Lisa: How is that guy Tony working out?
Beanpie: He’s alright. Still arrives at 2PM everyday, but at least he’s consistent.
Lisa: Whatever, just make sure you have all of the angles covered.
Beanpie: Of course love, I will.

Dance is Nothing Without Feet and Alignment

Written by: Kenneth-Michael

The beauty of dance is such a vague topic to address because there are so many aspects of dance to observe. Recalling when I was enrolled in my first dance class, the instructor seemed to find the beauty of dance in the feet and in the alignment and lines of the body. The course was a modern dance class which focused primarily on body awareness, balance, and coordination. Our first assignment involved pointing, flexing, and massaging the foot. For a week, we would spend five to ten minutes preparing our feet, which at first was unusual to me. Many times, the instructor would marvel at the students’ footwork and walk around the class, looking at their feet instead of the routine. When asked, “Why the fascination over the foot?” his reply was because it guides the body in line formation, balance, and the flow of energy transferred.

Slow Dancing (www.slowdancingfilms.com) by creator and director David Michalek takes 45 dancers from different dance backgrounds and cultures and records a five second routine. Each dancer was given five seconds to dance in their area of expertise with the end result displaying a slow motion 3000 frame-a-second-film lasting from two to eight minutes in length. The films were shown on a five-story screen in front of the New York State Theatre in New York City in 2007. The significance of the dancers in Michalek’s films is noticing the different twists and turns the foot travels. When the movement is slowed down, you are able to see every arch, twist, point, bend, and curve that the foot makes to guide the rest of the body.

"I Am Not My Hair"

Written by: luminoUS, Editor at Large

“Look, girl! She got that good hair! It’s all curly and stuff…” “Your hair is just nappy! I hate trying to comb your hair… You need it pressed or a relaxer!” I’ve heard both of these phrases one too many times during my childhood and even still today as an adult. What eXactly deems one’s hair as “good” or “bad”? Does good hair obey rules? Does bad hair stay out all hours of the night and wreck havoc on society? Too many times people place connotations upon hair that it could never live up to.

Being spoon fed images of beauty by the hands of Lady Liberty and the children of her nation, African Americans have been groomed to believe that the “s” curl pattern of their locs is no less than horrid. Our hair was deemed down right dreadful during the days of slavery by the Europeans who forced us to inhabit the foreign shores of this once distant land simply because it was different from their thin, flowing tresses. Unbeknownst to them, our hair was our crowning glory and protection against the heat and other elements indigenous to Mother Africa. Thick like lambs wool and coiled into a perfect “s” shape, our hair cushioned and insulated our crowns from the heat of the sun. But, when in Rome, many tend to do as the Romans, and before long we as a people began to take on the ideology that straight, thin hair was the only form of beauty when speaking in the realm of cosmetology.

I was forced to sit in front of the hot stove every Saturday evening. Whose turn was first or last did not matter because the procedure was always the same. Grandma would sit upon her stool with a slab of Blue Magic grease upon the back of her hand. She would part the hair, apply grease to the scalp, then remove the hot comb from whichever eye of the stove that it rested upon and dead press your hair until it was silky and flowing. Once she was finished, she would roll your hair with sponge rollers or pieces of a brown paper bag and come Sunday morning, we would all have a head full of curly, bouncy hair.

Kim Kardashian: Real Curves Or Not?

Written by: Chenita “Infinite Apex” Dickerson

Many will look at these pictures of Kim Kardashian and, if they don’t already know what they represent, will be confused. Confused about what the real picture is. Which one is a real representation of who she is and which one is the fake picture? Is someone trying to make her look bad by changing her picture on the right to the one on the left or is someone trying to pull a fast one by creating a computerized perfect Kim? Well, before I tell you, I have a question: “Which one do you want: the RED pill or the BLUE pill?”

Talk about eXcaping the matriX. I was floored. I had heard the rumors and heard a little about a controversy about her picture, but I didn’t know it would be to this extent. As you may know (or have guessed) the picture on the left is the real Kim Kardashian. The untouched photo was published by accident and removed a short time later, but not before others discovered it. Kim issued a statement saying that she is curvy and it’s expected that she should have some cellulite. She also stated that maybe now people will see that just because someone is on the cover of a magazine doesn’t mean they have a perfect body. While it’s commendable that Kim took pride and is still confident, it is a shame that she would allow herself to be changed to that extent, all for the sake of fake beauty! Many women would stop starving themselves, crying all night, and allowing people to tell them that big can not be beautiful if they saw the real picture of Kim Kardashian and countless other women as they really are. Cindy Crawford even said that she doesn’t wake up as the Cindy Crawford we see after all of the hair, makeup, and touchups. Women want to be these women and men want to be with the images of these women and will pay money, cry, sweat, and starve to make it happen and, ironically, it doesn’t even exist.

There were so many corrections to the picture that I wondered why they even used her as the model to begin with. The corrections that I noticed were as follows. See if you can find more:

1. Her hair was smoothed out to look perfectly round…
2. Her “baby hairs”, as we call them, were completely erased…
3. There were other photos from the shoot that Kim posted on her own web page that were untouched and she had a pimple on her forehead…
4. Her complexion was lightened and evened out…
5. Her breasts and thighs were lightened and highlighted…
6. Her left breast was down-sized near her arm…

Want to Start Your Own Business?

Written by: Shaun Bolden

With so many social networks available today, finding someone that shares the same common interests as you is very easy. Making a friend has never been easier. What happens if you want to meet someone in a more professional manner? What do you do if you have the product, but not the support?

A group here in Ontario sought to fix this problem. They call themselves “Building Blocx” and they are Nicole Trotter, Tyrone Tulloch, Simone Shirley, and Richard Dawkins. These are a collection of four young professionals who saw the need to help other young professionals connect and create a business network of their own.

Once they had the idea, they now needed to get all of these young go-getters to gather in a place they feel comfortable. What better place than a lounge? They held an event for everyone to mingle and talk. I myself was interested to see if this would bring out a crowd that is more or less in the same industry.
